YOUR COMPLETE GUIDE TO PURCHASING NEW HANGERS

Switching out the hangers in your closet from mismatched and cleaner’s hangers to uniform ones is one of the easiest things to do to give your closet a facelift.

You’ll feel like Mr/Mrs. Organizer without even doing much!

You might want to be minimalistic (like me) and keep things simple by choosing only 2 or 3 types of hangers that work for most items or you might be the type that needs the perfect hanger for each type of item (my definition of maximalist but we’ll save that for another post! Lol!) . Either way, I’ve got you covered! If you are tight on space (who isn’t?), you’ll want to use only slim hangers.

Velvet hangers are a popular choice which are a bit cheaper than the ones I show below but I will say something very unpopular:

I DON'T LIKE VELVET HANGERS!!!

Why? Because they get dusty quickly! They’re even dusty when you take them out of the package! Not for my clean clothes! No no! Also the non slip fabric stretches out certain fabrics. I prefer plastic slim hangers with metal hooks.

Tip: Matching all the “hooks” of the hangers is what gives the closet the nice uniform look.

So here is my complete hanger guide that I use in my home, and for my many happy clients-

1) Basic Hanger- This hanger works for most item like dresses , tops, sweaters that you will be hanging ( we'll have to discuss another time , what to hang and what to fold) shirts, suits, 2 piece sets and even pants. Use this for almost everything!

2) Shirt hangers - Basic hangers are fine for most items , but if you insist , these pair well as a shirt hanger

3) Pant hangers - You can always fold a pair of pants over a basic hanger but if you want a special hanger for pants these are my favorites

4) Skirt hangers - This is also a necessity in a closet. I like both types .

5) Suit hangers - Some people want a special hanger that gives support to the shoulders. These are my favorite

6) Coat hangers- I’ve seen basic hangers used in coat closets as well but these are a bit sturdier.

Here’s a wooden basic coat hanger

Lucite hangers are for a more high end look so many will splurge there. https://amzn.to/3tVULt2

7) Non slip hanger- For those of you who always need the perfect hanger, this might be it! It has non-slip rubber pieces so slippery items won’t fall off. It has hooks for strappy items like tanks and other spaghetti straps . It also has a non-slip piece on the middle rod for pants . So here you go, hangers for maximalists!

8 )Kid’s basic hangers- Kids clothing is smaller so they need their own hangers . I usually switch over to adult hangers at about size 10. I skip the medium size hangers. I think they aren’t worth it. Tweens grow so fast!

Tip 1: When kids are in between sizes, I use the kid size and adult size hangers based on the what works for the item

Tip #2: It’s also a good trick for xs adult sizes as well!

9) Kids skirt hangers - I use these for skirts and also when I want to hang kids pants

Ok, so you didn’t know there are so many different types of hangers! Did you?

So where should you start?

1 and 4 for adults. 7 and 8 for kids. For those of you who already have basic hangers, perhaps you were just looking for a specific type of hanger to solve one of your clothing hanging “issues” (I know, I take this stuff very seriously!). In that case I hope I helped you too!

Happy Organizing!
